Lymph is a liquid that is produced in the tissues of the body. Normally, it drains back into the blood system through a network of vessels and nodes called the lymphatic system. The nodes also perform the role of filters, removing dead or abnormal cells and bacteria, and as such they play a very important role in the bodys defence agains infection.
If there lymph glands in your armpit have been removed as part of your surgery (or you have had radiotherapy in your armpit), there is a risk that you could get lymphoedema. This is a swelling in the arm or hand on the affected side, and is caused when the lymph fluid cannot drain away properly, because its exit route (the lymph nodes under the arm) have been removed.
Not all women get lymphoedema after surgery, and in any case it is usually possible to treat the swelling and prevent it from becoming a major problem.
There are a series of exercises that can help to reduce the risk of getting lymphoedema, and which can help drain fluid if you have got swelling.
BOX: Managing Lymphoedema
Here are some simple rules, to help take care of yourself, which you should incorporate into your daily routine whether or not you have lymphoedema:-
Try to avoid cutting or scratching yourself on the affected arm and hand. If you do, treat even the smallest graze with antiseptic, and keep it clean until it has healed. If it does not heal, see a doctor
Keep your arm well moisturised every day. Always apply moisturiser starting at your hand and stroking the moisturising up your arm towards your shoulder. This way you are also helping the lymph move up your arm.
Do not cut or push back the cuticles at the base of your nails, and use nail clippers rather than scissors to cut your fingernails
Use an electric razor or depilatory cream if you shave under your arm. Dont use a normal razor
Wear gloves if you are gardening, washing up or taking hot food from the oven, and use a thimble if you sew
Always avoid having injections, blood samples or your blood pressure taken from the affected arm
Use an insect repellent to prevent bites, which could become infected
Avoid wearing tight clothes which might constrict movement in your arm.
Exercise is important in helping the lymph to drain, particularly using the affected arm.
