Here in Tanzania there are many things believed about breast cancer that ARE NOT TRUE.
Breast cancer is not catching: You cannot pass it from one person to the next, so there is no danger of being around someone with breast cancer. Infact, someone with breast cancer needs all the love, hugs, comfort and attention they can get, so family and friends should make special effort to take care of them.
Breast feeding does not cause breast cancer:you cannot get breast cancer from breast feeding your baby. This is a dangerous myth. If you are able to breast feed, then breast feeding is the best way to feed your baby.It is hygienic, mobile, safe and convenient.
Breast feeding does not pass the cancer to your child: You absolutely cannot pass cancer onto anyone and breast feeding most certainly will not pass cancer on.Read about xxxx who has had two healthy children whilst being treated for breast cancer.
Ignorance is not bliss:it is not good to ignore a breast lump. Although it may be frightening, most lumps are not cancerous, but in any case it is very important to get to a doctor. The earlier a lump is treated the best chance of treatment being successful.
We need funding: We are a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping women with breast cancer. We need funds to do this. We want to build a hospice; we want to offer counselling services; we want to run complementary medicine classes; we want to give financial assistance to women who cannot afford treatment; we want to have a comprehensive library of literature and printed information to send patients; we want to create a one-stop-shop centre of excellence & support.
